Northfield mourns loss of beloved leader, coach

NORTHFIELD — It was a somber scene as a community came together to mourn the sudden loss of a local leader.

A vigil was held at Birch Grove Park Thursday night to honor the memory of Jim Hoopes.

Hoopes was a decorated New Jersey State Trooper who coached youth baseball, youth basketball and youth football.

Friends describe him as an unbelievably giving person who always had time to help someone out and give back to kids.

He died Tuesday of a heart ailment. He was 39, and was survived by his wife Meredith and two sons Jayson and Joseph.
