Offshore Wind Offers Boost to Poor Town
Company seeks construction workers, town says jobs will replace lost refinery work
The plant, being built by the Germany-based EEW American Offshore Structures, is due to create about 500 jobs in the next few years in a town that recently lost hundreds of positions as the local refinery scaled down operations. When fully operational by 2025, the new factory will be the largest employer in a town where the poverty rate is 18%, the median household income is about $45,000, and the median home value in 2019 was $111,000, according to federal government data.
