NJ Midterm Elections: What to Know About Early Voting, How to Register

njspotlightnews.org

Election Day is still six weeks away, but voting is about to start in New Jersey, as county clerks are set to start sending mail-in ballots to some 900,000 voters, who can return them immediately.

Saturday (9/24) is the day when counties must begin mailing the paper ballots, which have become more popular as a form of voting in recent years. Roughly 900,000 people, or about 15% of all those registered, get a mail-in ballot automatically for every election. Others can ask to receive a ballot for this election or for all future elections by filling out a form and returning it to their county clerk.

  • Mail voting: All registered voters can request a no-excuse vote-by-mail ballot and vote from home.
  • Early in-person voting: You can vote early and in person at an early voting site from Oct. 29 through Nov. 6. Early in-person voting was introduced in New Jersey in 2021.
  • In-person voting on Election Day: The state’s general election is Tuesday, Nov. 8. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
